Terms of Service

The rules of
the set.

This page describes the terms you agree to by using Open Set. It is written in plain English, not legalese | it describes how the platform actually works today. It is not a substitute for legal advice.

01

Using Open Set

You need to be at least 18 years old, or the age of majority in your jurisdiction, to create an account. You're responsible for the accuracy of the information on your profile and for keeping your account credentials to yourself.

Open Set is here to connect South African filmmakers, crew, and film school talent | to post and find projects, gigs, and collaborators. Use it for that. Don't use it to scrape, resell, or build a competing directory from our data, and don't use it in any way that breaks the law.

02

Your content

You keep ownership of everything you post | your profile, showreel links, film submissions, project listings, messages, and feed posts. By posting content, you give Open Set a licence to display, store, and distribute it on the platform for the purpose of running the service | showing your profile to other users, listing your film in Now Showing, showing your project on the board, and so on.

That licence ends when you delete the content or your account, except where a copy needs to persist briefly for backups or legal reasons. You're responsible for making sure you actually have the rights to anything you upload | a showreel, a poster, a film clip, credits you claim. Don't post anything you don't have the rights to.

03

What's not allowed

Open Set is a working platform for a small industry | people will recognise each other. Keep it professional. Specifically, don't:

  • Harass, threaten, or abuse other users, on or off the platform as a result of contact made here.
  • Spam | mass unsolicited messages, connection requests, or repeated posting of the same content.
  • Impersonate another person, production company, or organisation.
  • Claim credits, roles, or films that aren't genuinely yours, or misrepresent your experience.
  • Post content that's illegal, hateful, sexually exploitative, or that infringes someone else's rights.
  • Attempt to bypass security, scrape the platform at scale, or interfere with how it runs.

If you see this happening, report it | the Report link on a post, or email us at hello@openset.co.za for anything else.

04

Suspension & termination

We can suspend or terminate an account that breaks these terms, without notice where the situation calls for it | active harassment, spam, impersonation, or anything putting other users at risk. Where it's a less urgent issue, we'll generally try to let you know what happened and why.

You can stop using Open Set at any time. To close your account, email hello@openset.co.za | see the Trust & Privacy page for what happens to your data when you do.

05

No vetting, no guarantees

Open Set is a directory and noticeboard | we don't vet the people, productions, or projects listed here, and we don't guarantee that any project, gig, or connection will lead to paid work, a safe set, or a professional outcome. Use the same judgement here that you would meeting anyone new in the industry: verify who you're working with, agree terms in writing, and use your own judgement about a shoot before you show up to it.

We're not a party to any agreement, payment, or dispute between users | if a filmmaker doesn't pay a crew member, or a project doesn't match its listing, that's between the people involved.

06

Liability

Open Set is provided as-is. To the extent permitted by law, we're not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of the platform, including lost work, lost income, or disputes with other users. Nothing here limits liability that can't legally be limited.

07

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of South Africa. Any dispute arising from these terms or your use of Open Set falls under the jurisdiction of the South African courts.

08

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as the platform changes. If we make a material change, we'll post a notice on the platform or email the address on your account before it takes effect. Continuing to use Open Set after a change takes effect means you accept the updated terms.
